Notice to Ward Nursing Staff How to Make up a Bed Neatly You don't have to be a perfectionist to keep a wards beds tidy. Your bed wills look nice, stay clean, and be the place you would like to sleep. Putting it all together neatly at first will even make daily bed-making easier! Steps 1. Start at the bottom with waterproof mattress. Fit it with a fully enclosed, waterproof mattress cover with zip closure. This waterproof protective covering must always be fitted on your mattresses. Smooth it out, running your hands outward from the middle to remove any creases or wrinkles. 2. Put on the mattress pad. Your mattress pad is an absorbative protective covering that goes on over your mattress cover. Smooth it out, running your hands outward from the middle to remove any creases or wrinkles. 3. Put the fitted bottom sheet in place. Pull the fitted bottom sheet elastic tightly and evenly over the mattress corners. Smooth from the centre, then tucking under the sides. 4. Add the top sheet. Place the wide hem of the sheet at the top with the good side of the sheet facing down. Spread it out evenly across the bed, allowing any extra length to fall at the bottom edge. Tuck in the bottom edge and make hospital corners (see lower): Pick up the side edge at the bottom corner and hold it out. Tuck in what is left hanging down at the corner, then let the edge fall and tuck it in as well. Repeat for the other bottom corner. 5. Put blanket over the sheets. Place blanket right side up with the top of the blanket at the point where you turn down the top sheet - about 8 inches from the top of the bed. Tuck in the bottom edge and make hospital corners there. Fold down the top sheet over the top edge of the blanket. Now the good side of the sheet is showing. Tuck in the entire side by the wall. If you wish to keep the covers tight or if they would otherwise hang out below the comforter or bedspread, tuck in the other side also. 6. Decorate with a warm bedspread. Spread the cover out evenly over the bed. Run your hands through the middle, removing any wrinkles or creases. 7. Don't forget the pillows. Put a waterproof pillow protector on each regular size pillow, and then add pillow cases. Fluff out the pillows and place them at the top of the bed. How to Make a Hospital Corner Hospital corners are easy to make yet look very neat and can improve any bed. Steps 1. Hold the long end of the sheet (the side without a hemmed edge) with both hands, and stand next to the bed. 2. Flip the sheet out over the bed, so that it billows out and spreads over the mattress. Position the sheet so that it hangs evenly over all sides of the mattress. Make sure the long edges are parallel to the floor and hang below the bottom of the mattress. 3. Take the short end of the sheet, and tuck it snugly under the end of the mattress. Make sure that the sheet lies smoothly between the box spring and mattress. 4. Go around to the opposite (short) end of the bed and pull the sheet taut. Tuck the sheet under the mattress as above, maintaining the tension you've created. 5. Move back around to the long side of the bed. Tuck the edge of the sheet under the mattress. This should create a vertical fold but won't if the short edge of the sheet is bunched under the end of the mattress. 6. Go to the other side of the bed and repeat the last step. This is where you can tug firmly on the sheet to create a taut surface. How to Change a Duvet Cover Changing a duvet cover seems simple until you realise that the duvet twisted inside so you have to climb inside! Steps 1. Lay out the duvet flat on the bed. Turn the water proof cover inside out, and lay it on top of the duvet; make sure the plastic cover's fastenings are fully undone. 2. Find the seams of the cover and straighten them to make sure the cover is flat. It's hard to change the cover if it's twisted. 3. Put your arms inside and follow the seams up until you can grip the corners. 4. Through the cover's corners, hold the corners of the duvet, and shake the cover on to the duvet. Hold the corners tight. 5. To shake the cover all the way on, shake the duvet over a banister, from a bunk bed or stand on the bed. 6. You may have to pull the last of the cover over the bottom of the duvet and tuck in the corners. Then redo the fastenings. 7. Repeat steps 1 – 6 with the outer cotton cover.
